a quilt for Caroline

Did I ever tell you that I'm not very creative? I'm just no good at design. I can make things if I know what I'm going for, but figuring out what I'm going for is not so easy. This is where I am on designing a quilt for Caroline. I want to make her one for her "big girl bed" (which we don't own yet, haven't shopped for, and aren't planning to move her to for months). Anyway, this was my original idea:

I wanted to have a good bit of white (which I later decided would be slightly off-white) and I loved the butterfly fabric. I thought that I would use different red fabrics for the center squares. But once I started looking at fabrics to go with the butterfly fabric, I decided that I might not like that idea so much. So, I changed my idea to this:

To give this a little more interest, it would be quilted in some design. The butterfly section would probably be quilted around the butterflies and the borders would have some sort of little design. But the more that I looked at it, I wasn't sure how it would look on the bed. So, I played around with my picture and tried to get a representation of what the bed would actually look like with this quilt on it. Here is that attempt:

As you can see, the butterfly section would hang over the sides and the bottom just a bit. I'm not sure what I think about that. Matt thinks that maybe it needs to be smaller. I'm also not sure if I should break up the expanse of butterfly fabric with something. So, here is where you all come in. What should I do? I know there is creativity out there. Help! Oh yeah, I am good with completely changing the design. I just want the butterfly fabric to have some bit of prominence. So, what ideas do you have?

Yeah, I'm no help! I do think that if you go with the idea that you currently have that you should make the large butterfly section slightly smaller so that it doesn't hang over the edge...maybe comes right to the edge. That's all the help I am! :) Super impressed by your quilt diagrams, though! How'd you do that???

I just did it in MS Paint (comes on your computer by default). I drew rectangles and copy and pasted the fabric picture. I have to have something to look at...I don't visualize very well. Once I decide on something, I'll probably lay the fabric out on the floor before I start cutting just to make sure it looks like what I think it will look like. Oh yeah...and the bed picture I fiddled with in GIMP. It's something like Photoshop but it's a free download (so not as user friendly).

So you want the butterfly fabric, the off-white, and the red? I can probably come up with a few designs in my quilting software...how much work do you want to put into it?

The would be cool! I don't want it to be too complicated. I kinda want to keep it simple - kinda modern. I don't want anything too traditional looking (like stars or what have you). Oh yeah...and it will be twin sized. Probably to tuck in around the pillow rather than have a pillow sham. Let me know if you have other questions. I would love to have some design help!

I think I favor the first design better because it has more interest. What about making those squares larger & still keeping a lot of white? Could you repeat the butterfly fabric in the squares too? Or you could be really funky & probably hard & do circles? Or go w/ the lady who has quilting software. That sounds amazing! I totally reject the idea that you aren't creative! Give me a break! I am also very impressed w/ your diagrams & can't believe you got paint to work so well for you. I feel I'm pretty computer literate, but that program is just too simple or too nothing for me ever to accomplish anything. I especially love what you did w/ GIMP. Now, THAT was clever. I would have never thought of that & wouldn't have discovered it until the quilt was on the bed!

I think you're probably being way too analytical with this. I think if you like the butterfly fabric, you like the white, and you like the red, then you'll probably end up liking the result.

When Jessica smocks I find that my "like" of the item comes just as much from the fact that she made it as it does from the design, color, or final result. I have a feeling this quilt will be the same way.

I personally like the first design best, but I'm a man so what do I know.

I was going to suggest a pattern book, bit it looks like mmeblue has you covered. Good luck!

I have to agree with Dan. But I'm sure that mmeblue in her creativeness will come up with something great too.

I also like the idea of tucking it under the pillow. I always grew up with bedspreads that way and you can't find them anymore. Plus if you do it for a twin, there should be enough extra so when she goes off to Tech it will fit her extra long twin! just thinking a head a few years.

Hmm...I tend toward the traditional myself, so I don't know how good I'll be at coming up with something that isn't, but we'll see. :)

I did think of this as something you might like (not something I made - it was posted in a quilting community by another quilter). It has the squares, and you could emphasize the butterfly fabric as much as you wanted and still work a few others in as well, and I think it's got a "modern" feel to it.

This one (which is one of mine) also has a somewhat nontraditional look, and I think it would look neat with whites in the center and then different shades of red, working out to the butterfly fabric in the outside (where the blue is on mine).

Neither of those is actually a mock-up in my quilting software, but I could put them in there if you wanted, or I could keep trying if I'm not on the right track with your tastes yet. :)

I like the looks of the one on flikr, but with a little more order. And even if I wanted it to look like that, my loving husband would not be thrilled. :) But yes, that is the kind of look that I am thinking. However, I do want red or the butterfly at the edge. I want it to be used and not get to yucky looking at the edge. Thanks for helping me out!

Okay, here's a more orderly version...just picture your butterfly fabric where I put the flowery one here (couldn't find a good match for it in EQ5). What do you think?

I really really REALLY like the one in that last comment. :) (if you want my two cents!) Good job, mmeblue!

I also love mmeblue's last idea. Great job!

I'm still contemplating that last idea. Give me time.
