closing and decorating

We have a closing date! We are set to close on the 22nd. We are ready to get there and get started on the house so we can move in! At the moment, we are planning to move the last weekend in July, so we'll have several weeks to get things done.

On the decorating front, I am now leaning toward going all hardwood if they can be refinished. Every time I go over and look at the wood floors (I was there yesterday), I think "I just hate to cover this up with carpet." So...as of right now, I'm in the market for rugs. :)

Also, I am still debating about Nathan's room and our room. Below is a picture I found online (HGTV's Rate a Room). I'm thinking about going with something like this in Nathan's room. However, I don't know that I want to put up chair rail, so I'd have to do something different there. I could put up a wallpaper border, but I'm not sure if that's what I really want. I want it to look nice, though. What do all you decorating divas think?

Oh yeah...and what would you recommend for the ceilings? They're all painted ceilings. I'm thinking of just painting them all white, but I don't know if I want to go with the same color white as all the trim or something different for a little contrast. (There is currently no crown moulding.)

One trick I learned on ceilings (I watch too much TLC), is to make the room look taller: leave the main ceiling white and then use the wall color to paint about a 12" border (or one roller width) all the way around the ceiling of the room. It gives the apperance of a tray ceiling. We did it in our office with a yellow-gold and it really gives it a nice touch. I've also heard if you use a pastel or light wall color, you can also paint the ceiling the same color. works great with blues in kids rooms... then you can paint clouds!

I'm not very adventurous when it comes to ceiling colors--I'd probably just paint them white. But, I do like the cloud idea!

for Nathan's room, you could do some kind of simple wallpaper at the bottom of the wall--like a tone on tone, or a textured paper; and above that could go a border at the chair rail height. if you don't want to do the chair rail itself.

I like the picture you found--very close to what I was meaning the other day--a contrast color!

I got your swatches for you, Jennifer. I'll try to put them in the mail tomorrow. I like the idea of painting ceilings a color -- toned down wall color or the like, if you have to paint them anyhow. Of course, that means you have to choice ANOTHER color, and white is soooo much easier. Are you planning on doing the painting yourselves?

Disclaimer: I am not a decorating diva. I know what I like, but I eenerally wouldn't know how to go about acheiving it.

The room in the picture does look nice, but white chair rail might just be too much for the will power of a boy with a crayon.

I wouldn't worry too much about the ceilings. I'm sure painting them could add to a room, but how often do you really look at a ceiling?

When you talk about chair rail do you mean possibly using beaded board below??? We put that in Lydia's room at the old house and loved it. I've also heard mothers of young boys say they liked it b/c it protects the walls from rough play and scuffs and marks wipe clean so easily.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Thanks, Elizabeth!

I do not expect to use bead board. I think it's a little too feminine looking for Nathan's room.

Oh yeah...we are going to paint ourselves...with some family help!

BTW, I mailed the swatches today. :-)

I'll tell you something fun that the previous owners did in their little girl's closet. Her room was blue, so they painted the closet blue and did a big sunshine above the top shelf. This is Kate's closet now, and every time I open it up, it makes me smile.

Also, at Target today I saw that they have various Thomas the Train bedroom decorating stuff there. I was looking at a bunch of different things there, so I think I may be getting things mixed up. BUT, in their hangers, hooks, and home improvement section they had some cute adhesive borders and adhesive wall decorations. They also had some stuff in their kid's do it yourself (DIY) decorating section. For what it is worth.
